A Dishwasher Will Not Keep Your Valuables Safe in a Hurricane

There's a lot of hurricane preparedness advice flying around, including one tip to store your valuables in your dishwasher because dishwashers are waterproof. Don't do it.

Ralph Feldkamp, owner of an appliance and repair shop in St. Petersburg, Florida, told the Tampa Bay Times that he sees flooded dishwashers all the damn time . If your home floods, your dishwasher is likely to flood, too. Dishwashers can also turn on during a storm, or be ripped apart by wind.

Other bad advice includes duct-taping your windows (they'll still break, but will be in larger pieces that pose more of a threat to nearby people and objects), and keeping your windows open a crack (this doesn't save your windows and just lets water in, so you'll come back to a moldy house).
