Follow Navy Seal’s 40% Rule To Push Beyond Your Limit And Reach Your Goals

Jesse Itzler is a millionaire entrepreneur and some years ago he started taking interest in running marathons. During one of such long distance runs, a 100-mile run in San Diego, he first met a Navy Seal, a member of U.S. Navy's primary special operations force. The Seal was running the entire 100- mile marathon himself, while he was running the race as part of a six-person relay team, says Itzler in his Big Think video .

Itzler got curious about this runner and kept observing him only to learn that he had broken all the small bones in both of his feet and had kidney damage, yet he finished the race - which was an astonishing case of high endurance. What happened next was unbelievable, after Itzler realized that he could learn so much from this man, he invited the Navy Seal to come and live with his family for one month.

There begins the surprising story behind Jesse Itzler's book 'Living with a SEAL: 31 Days Training with the Toughest Man on the Planet'. The story goes on as on the first day itself the Navy Seal asked Itzler to do 100 pull ups, where he was barely able to do just 8. But in the end, Itzler ended up doing 100 pull ups - one at a time, after trying for many hours. This was an eye opening moment for him as he realized 'we're all capable of so much more than we think we are'.

"When your mind is telling you you're done, you're really only 40 percent done," advised the Navy Seal, which is now famously known as the 40% rule. This has been proved over and over again by marathon runners as most of the runners 'hit the wall' around mile 16 to 20. Yet, it has been documented that 99 % of the people in the US that run marathons finish the race, even after 'hitting the wall'.

The Seal who taught Itzler the 40% rule is David Goggins., who currently the World Record holder for most pull-ups done in 24-hours (4,025) and an Ironman triathlete. So, next time when your mind says you cannot continue a task anymore, do remember that you probably have enough energy left in your tank to push through and finish.
