Dress in Formals for Your Next Flight and You May Get Upgraded to First Class

S. Shanthi
The most laughed episode of Friends would surely be the one in which Monica and Chandler demand an upgrade on a plane. Like them, most of you might be hoping to score an upgrade to business class every time you travel. It is quite understandable, for nothing can be more thrilling than travelling business, that too without paying for it. Who doesn’t like to have champagne while the rest of the crowd struggles with overhead compartments?

Give it a shot and ask for it directly if it is your honeymoon, anniversary or birthday, and you are desperate for special treatment. Though Monica and Chandler weren’t lucky, you can surely try your luck. After all, it is your special day. The worst that can happen is they can say a no. However, ask politely and directly. You can say, “If you are upgrading passengers on this flight, I would like to be considered.” However, if you are too shy to do that, you can try some of these hacks.

Dress formal
You are more likely to get upgraded to first class if you look important. Travel experts often say that you are more likely to be offered an upgrade if you are dressed right. So the bottom line is dress up like you are travelling for a business meeting.

Opt for oversold flights
Travel experts often say that if there is one sure-fire way of getting that precious first or business class upgrade it would be opting for oversold flights . That is because oversold flights will have someone they should bump at all times. And, if that person is you, they owe you an upgrade or compensation or both.

Be loyal to your airline
This is another secret to getting a flight upgrade. Just join the airline’s loyalty programme. Make sure you get a card for each partnership and sign up for the airline’s rewards card. The first question most airlines inquire about when you ask for an upgrade is, “Are you a member?” Passengers with points or membership will be upgraded before others.

Give up your seat for a family to sit together
Chivalry always pays. If you feel a family is looking to sit together, immediately offer your seat. You never know what you might end up getting instead. It is a gamble. And in every probability, you can get an upgrade.

Ask your travel agent
Many travel agents have an understanding with some airlines that lets them choose seats. For instance, they can help you get a seat towards the front of the plane, in exit rows and the like. They can also see an upgrade quickly. Some even recommend you to the airline and request them to choose you for an upgrade.

Check in super early
You should check in really early, some three to four hours before the scheduled time. The more time you have, the more people you can ask about your upgrade. What most people don’t know is every airline representative you meet, from the check-in staff to the gate staff, has the authority to help you.
