These Three Strategies Will Help You Keep Your New Year's Fitness Resolutions

Mihir Patkar, Gawker Media

Getting healthy and fit is the most common new year's resolution for most people. If you want to achieve that goal-or any goal in the new year, psychologists recommend these three strategies.

Researchers at the British Psychological Society studied 60 students, who were all asked to maintain a diary that chronicled their attempts to shoot for a specific goal. The findings showed that three habits were crucial to fitness-based goals:

  • If the student reflected back on their diary of attempts, identifying what worked and what did not in their techniques.
  • If the person was held accountable and had feedback through a support group, an expert, friends or family.
  • If mini-goals were created that lead up to the larger goal.

The diaries especially helped in motivating the students, serving as confidence boosts. Life Calendar, an app we've covered before could be a good diary for this purpose, if you need one to get started with, or you can always use good old fashioned pen and paper .
