How Trump's Proposed Budget Could Affect Your Air and Train Travel

The U.S. Department of Transportation is facing a 13% funding cut in Trump's proposed budget, and if that budget goes through, your air and train travel could be affected in several ways. Here are the changes you might see as a result of this new budget.

If you have family, friends, or work that takes you to more remote parts of the country, getting there may be a lot more difficult if Trump's cuts to the DoT go through. The Essential Air Services program would be eliminated, which means many small or rural airports would have to close. If you rely on these rural airports to fly out of where you live, you'll be faced with a much longer drive to the airport.

Amtrak will also take a hit, with funding changing to focus on the most popular routes, like the Northeast Corridor. Train service may shrink to just 23 states and longer routes, like California Zephyr (from Chicago to San Francisco), would be stopped. Whether or not you think these cost cuts are reasonable, if you use the smaller airports or less popular Amtrak routes, you might want to look into alternatives for future trips.
