Many of the factors you can guess: Netflix, Amazon, and premium cable channels are producing high-quality films that are "free" and don't require you to leave your house. Ticket and popcorn prices keep increasing. And you can only watch so many Spiderman origin stories before you're tapped out.
Bloomberg investigated what theaters are doing to win customers back, and found that they're investing in luxury seating and more food and drink options. AMC said it might start selling movie-related merchandise.
That's all well and good, but for me the biggest factors are not wanting to pay $17 for a single ticket in New York City (I recently got MoviePass , and it's great, though I'm not sure how long the deal can possibly last) and offering something other than superhero/comic book stories. Give me more rom-coms. Give me kid-free viewings (sorry, parents, I don't want to hear your 6-year-old asking what the force is during The Last Jedi ).
