Next Week Might Be the Best Thrift Store Shopping of the Year
If you're on the hunt for new-to-you stuff but aren't planning to buy new, then the next few weeks are probably the best time of the year for you to hit your local thrift stores.
Reddit user Loreleigeller suggests
that the first week of January is the best time to shop at thrift stores. The idea is that people have spent their time off purging some of their excess stuff so they can start the new year fresh. The Holiday season also often makes people feel more generous, which means they might give away items that they otherwise would have held on to or be more willing to drop off something like their old stand mixer after they received a new one as a gift.
Loreleigeller also notes that changes in the US tax laws may have encouraged more people, especially those of a wealthier designation, to decide to make a large donation that they can write off for 2017 before the new laws go into effect.
Certainly what will get donated depends on where you are. The amount of time it takes to process donations also varies from thrift shop to thrift shop, but all those donations should start popping up this week or next, making them both prime weeks to pick up some great new-to-you items.
