Close Open-Ended Chapters of Your Life to Welcome Joy

S. Shanthi
“One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through. Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished,” says author Paulo Coelho. Unless and until we close certain doors, we cannot open new ones. Putting an end to certain things in life can ensure happiness. Past hurts have a way of keeping us stuck in our tracks, unable to move forward or experience joy. Time can really tie people together. It is easy to blame the other person or the circumstances but remember, it takes two to tango. We must focus on what went wrong from our end. It helps in viewing the whole scenario from a different angle. Taking ownership would allow you to be more objective which in turn helps in thawing the intense feelings of anger, rage and become more empathetic and forgiving.

But we all know that if you feel as though there is nothing substantial keeping you connected, it is not right to stick to it. Time is not a strong enough reason to hold on to something that is simply no longer worth holding onto. Bidding goodbye to relationships that are not happy anymore is one part of it. There are few more reasons you should shut doors.

When you get into a repeat mode
If you look back, may be you have been doing the same thing repeatedly. You wake up late, reach work late, check email in the morning for an hour, then go for a cup of cappuccino, come back, attend a meeting, power point presentation and so on. Everyone around you knows you are on repeat. You haven’t even changed your hairstyle in the past ten years. Maybe it’s the look in your eyes. You are going on past accomplishments. When you get into this mode, you should understand that it is time you should close certain chapters.

When you are not passionate about what you do
When you don’t feel motivated to wake up every day to get to work it means you are not passionate about what you do. And that is the toughest stage to be in. There is nothing worse than mindlessly doing what you don’t even care about. It is time you chuck whatever you are doing if you are not passionate about it, unless and until you have monetary constrains. Then you don’t have much of a choice. Many studies say that when one truly enjoys what he does, he never really works a day in his life.

When you have stopped exploring new things
One study found that people who travel overseas for work are more creative. When we try something new, we think new thoughts, we embrace new things, and we feel much happier about life. However, when we stop doing that it is time to stop doing what we are doing now and totally shift to a different setting. You can move cities or shift jobs or pursue a hobby. You can also travel.
If you haven’t travelled much in life, you haven’t experienced life. It is very important to explore new places. In fact, studies suggest that by taking a break from your daily life, unplugging from the pulls and pushes of technology and engaging in new activities in new places, you have an easier opportunity to release unwanted habits and stress. When you try new you can see old much better and realize maybe old isn’t so great. Something in your thought process changes. More importantly, so does your perspective.
