Eight Things Not To Do After Growing Up
Here's a blackbook on what not to do once you have said adios to adolescence
Your teens — and those wonderful, carefree years you had as a student — are now over and things that were once amusing are no more socially acceptable. In fact, when you enter your 20s, the age brings with it an expected sense of maturity. There are things that you must definitely not do. Here they are:
1) Sleeping until noon
Waking up at noon on weekends was an unquestioned routine when you were 18. But things change, young man. As you discuss your 20s, people expect you to make the most of your day. You'll have places to reach, friends to see, things to sort and work to do. Rise and shine early, and you'll be good to go through the day. During the week, everyone tends to be horribly busy so weekends are precious. Productivity is at an all-time low when you're simply lying-in.
2) Feast on ready-to-eat meals
Cooking, leave alone following, a healthy nutritious meal seemed tiresome task when you were a teen. It was much easier to live off a college canteen diet, takeaways or ready-to-eat noodles. However, your metabolism is ageing with you. Any self-sufficient person needs a variety of healthy meals to stay fit. Avoid those chemical and colour induced meals, and learn a few recipes from your mum to whet your hunger.
3) Ignore exercise
You've always wanted to get fit. It's been on your to-do list for a while. However, there comes a point in every man's life where taking pride in his appearance becomes a priority. That point is right about now. Whether you want to bulk up or drop some extra kilos, that little ego boost you'll receive each time someone notices how suave you're looking, it'll be worth it. That apart, being fit means wading off the possibilities of lifestyle problems like diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol.
4) Treating parents as ATM
One of the major problems you will face is the fact that you have no money. You will face that awkward financial phase where you have left home and have your independence but don't have much in the bank for all your fun-filled adventures. Quite the dilemma. In solving this completely unavoidable problem, there are two types of men. The first controls his finances and plans as best he can to save or make his money go further. He's the ant. The second runs out of cash and calls mom and dad for a bail out. He's the grasshopper. Unfortunately, option two won't do much for the self-esteem. So it is time to take those bank statements seriously.5) 5)
5) Bedroom posters
Blu-Tacking posters of actors and models all over your room is just not acceptable. And nostalgia is no valid excuse when it comes to shabby wall art. So, unless you want to give off the impression you're still mentally 16, steer clear of bedroom posters.6)
6) Neglecting your teeth
Flossing is not a word any of us like hearing from our dentist. Now it's time to step-back, reflect on how you've been ignoring the bits inbetween your front teeth and agree that flossing is totally and completely necessary. Bad teeth means bad news particularly as most of us would like to hang onto them for several decades. Don't ignore them. The health of your mouth affects the wellbeing of your entire body.
7) Leaving your work until the night before
We've all been there, at 2 am, gulping down shots espresso, or a can of energy drink and struggling to finish that college assignment due in the next day. But from now on, life is hard. Your 20s are like starting all over again. You're up against professionals, who've done it all before, and will have to fight to kick start and maintain your career. It is time to drop those bad habits and be proactive with your work.
8) Drinking under pressure
So, you folks could chug four glasses of beer and still down a few more over a happy rounds of drinking games. While some of you didn't particularly enjoy the extra alcohol, you still downed a few and more to please thy friends. But come 20s, and your body's ability to deal with all that alcohol slowly drops. So resist the urge to organise all the fun. This will save you some cash too.
