I Am Nitin Kulkarni, Director, Corporate Affairs, Mars International (Pedigree), And This Is How I Work

"Do what you love and love what you do," is the mantra that Nitin Kulkarni, Director, Corporate Affairs, Mars International (Pedigree) has always firmly believed in. For him, success was a consequence and not a goal. He rather counted on doing what he was passionate about, which eventually led to success.

His roles and responsibilities at Mars India include handling Corporate Affairs for the ISC Business in international markets like India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives. He also handles responsibilities for pet care, chocolate and Wrigley's' and this is how he works.

Tell us about your journey.
I was born and brought up in Pune and Mumbai and have a Post Graduate degree in Analytical Chemistry and Masters in Business Administration. I joined Mars International, seventeen years ago and was one of the first few associates, when Mars started its operations in India in 2001. I then went on to head a specialist channel team comprising of veterinary associates for 8 years. In the process, I worked closely with influencers like veterinarians, breeders and institutions for dog food.
I am also happy and proud to share with you that I was responsible for introducing Royal Canin and RC range of dry pet food in India. Other than this, I have always had a special interest in listening to Hindustani vocal music.

What is the current project you are involved in?
We see India as a potential market for pet food. With social media booming and digitalization making its way, people are more aware about pet care as compared to the scenario 5 years ago. Thus, our current focus is to drive content online on preventive health and training and behaviour tactics for pets. We are in the process of designing an exciting campaign #JustPooch for this.

What is the one word that best describes how you work?
Passion. I believe one should be passionate about his work if he wants to be successful in his job. I ensure to stay motivated and driven regardless of the obstacles I face. I believe success comes only to those who are passionate, self-driven and like to stay motivated. At Mars, this passion also means living our 5 Principles - Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom.

What are you currently reading? A novel, comic book, website, magazine? Or what's something you'd recommend?
I am currently reading 'A Dog's purpose' by W. Bruce Cameron. It describes the journey of a dog in its various lives, through incarnations and how it is looking for a purpose through each of its lives. The novel has been adapted into a Hollywood movie with same name as well. After this, I am also planning to read 'A Dog's Journey', which is a sequel to 'A Dog's Purpose' by the same author. I enjoy reading fiction!

What apps, software, or tools can't you live without?
I like to stay organized and always keep my diary and pen handy. I also believe WhatsApp is a lifeline. It has inverted the difficulties of communication. I depend on WhatsApp to stay connected to almost everyone at work. I also keep music apps in my phone to relax and stay rejuvenated as I enjoy listening to Hindustani classical music, when not working.

What's your workspace setup like?
We at Mars, believe in the concept of open office. I believe open office fuels more interactive communication across teams. As an effort to create a healthy and happier environment for everyone, we also have two cute in house pooches who run around the office space adding a bit of fun and playfulness to our everyday routines.

Would you call yourself a smart worker or a hard worker?
I believe in the combination of both. I also believe that an intelligent working technique, along with persistent efforts is the absolute key to success. All successful people in the world have worked hard to achieve what they have now.

What's your best time-saving shortcut or life hack?
We all have 24 hours in a day but how we utilize them in an effective way is the key to have a productive day. I incorporate small hacks throughout the day to achieve all my goals. At work my hack is starting my day by tackling a task that I hate. This helps me avoid putting off a boring task or procrastinating. For fitness I try to adopt fun hacks like running or jogging with my dog when I have to take him out for his daily exercise. It's a good way to incorporate fun in my fitness regime.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without and why?
Whenever I get the time I switch to my Kindle to catch up on some light reading.

How do you recharge? What do you do when you want to forget about work?
I am fond of listening to Hindustani vocal classical music. Whenever I get time, I along with my wife, who is also a singer, steal some time off from our schedules to listen to it.

What's your sleep routine like? Are you a night owl or early-riser?
I am a light sleeper, but I always make sure to devote at-least 8 hours to my sleep in night to ensure a productive day at work the next day.

What's the best advice you've ever received?
Be passionate. Be eager to learn and be patient.

What do you listen to while you work?
I prefer keeping my day fruitful and thus devote my working hours towards work.

What's one advice you would like to give to budding entrepreneurs?
It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. One comes across, ups and downs, success and failures, and can no better be described as world's best roller coaster ride. My advice to the young and budding entrepreneurs is to 'Stay Positive'. Don't let bad days bring you down, learn from your mistakes, fail and rise. Embracing each challenge as a new opportunity will make way for your success. Make sure to sap all your energy, do hard work and keep your team motivated, no matter how much you fail. Always remember, "Success only comes to those who make way for it".
